Nearly 140 coaches are currently coaching key workers pro-bono at 21 NHS organisations and care homes via Coaching through Covid (CTC).
CTC was set up as a compassionate response to rapidly and effectively deliver high-quality free virtual coaching to key workers dealing with the pandemic. It’s endorsed by the UK International Coach Federation, the Association for Professional Executive Coaching and Supervision, the European Mentoring & Coaching Council, Ashridge Centre for Coaching, Henley Centre for Coaching and the Association of Coaching Supervisors.
Sponsors include Coaching at Work, the Academy of Executive Coaching, The Conscious Leader, Lee Hecht Harrison, Belletty Design, 23x.net, Hype London, 3GHR, Liz Hall Coaching, Lindsay Wittenberg Ltd, StoryTagger, The Fearless Organization, Compassion Institute and Visible Dynamics.
CTC coaches are supporting workers in organisations including Barts Health NHS Trust, Berkshire West Clinical Commissioning Group, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, Camden Learning Disabilities Service, Claremont Care Services, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
A five-week CTC pilot at the Royal Free completed in May received excellent feedback from participants and from one of the consultant anaesthetists championing the programme at the Trust, Ciara Donohue. She said:
“The sense of overwhelm has both been a driver and a challenge in setting up this programme. Those who have found the bandwidth to engage have relayed to me just how precious and resourcing their coaching experience has been. How opening up a safe space with a neutral party has allowed them to organise the chaos, prioritise, regulate. We have been incredibly touched and humbled by the generosity of your offer to care for us as we try our best to care for our patients and colleagues. With the passing of the first Covid surge our workforce are bruised and weary. In this period, the coaching relationship you are providing to help us to reflect, restore and potentially grow, feels like such a blessing.”
More than 200 coaches are either active or have been approved to proceed through CTC’s rigorous on-boarding process. CTC coaches are all highly experienced, accredited at EMCC Senior Practitioner, ICF PCC, APECS or equivalent levels, later-stage coaches in terms of coaching maturity, and all operating under personal supervision. CTC supports its coaches through diversity and inclusion sensitisation, trauma sensitisation/orientation, reflective practice groups, resilience and wellbeing coach education, and mindfulness and compassion training.
Although coaches may not get matched straight away, CTC is expanding its coaching pool to meet demand as it comes through.

CTC is also looking for support in other ways, including pointing to individuals and organisations who may be interested, or coaches acting as ‘light-touch’ focal points liaising with interested organisations.
