Course outline

Our super-power as coaches, particularly in these times of widespread adoption of AI and growing polarization, is our ability to build strong, conscious human-to-human relationships.

As coaches, our way of being – our capacity to be grounded, present and attuned – has a direct impact on client outcomes, influencing the depth of insight and wisdom we and our clients can access. In addition to supporting the coach to be more resilient and grounded, Mindful Coaching supports coaches to foster transformational profound human-to-human connection with clients.

As the British Psychological Society’s guidance on mindfulness-based approaches (BPS, 2022) highlights, mindfulness-based approaches have a growing body of clinical and research evidence for their use. According to the BPS, they’re a way of working that psychologists need to be aware of and consider offering to clients. We believe this is the case not only for coaching psychologists but all coaching practitioners.

Explicitly taking mindfulness into relationships, Relational Mindfulness (RM) expands mindful presence from the individual to the relational, bringing present-moment, non-judgemental awareness to self, others and the relationship, whilst speaking and listening. Practising RM helps us as coaches show up with profound presence and awareness, accessing somatic wisdom, attuning to ourselves, our clients and collective intelligence.

This Certificate offers an experiential introduction to – or a chance to deepen into – practices that help coaches be more fully present, aware, compassionate, and courageously collaborative. We will explore ways to ground ourselves in the body, attune deeply in relationship, and foster the kind of human connection where understanding, insight, and transformation can naturally arise.

The Mindful Coaching programme shares tried-and-tested individual mindfulness practices and exercises to use with clients, including the FELT model developed by one of the facilitators (Hall, 2015). It also draws on Relational Mindfulness (RM) practices for coaches to support greater presence and awareness, as set out in the facilitators’ pioneering book entitled Relational Mindfulness for Coaches: Enhancing Presence, Awareness, Wisdom, Compassion and Courageous Collaboration (Routledge, 2025).

Practising mindfulness and meditation can help us to be more present and aware. RM takes this a step further by bringing mindful awareness right into the moment of interaction with others and supporting us to engage in mindful dialogue. The practice of RM can support coaches to co-create compassionate, psychologically safe yet courageous coaching spaces, generating profound insight, wisdom and understanding in the client.

The Certificate will include both individual mindfulness practice and RM practice (in pairs or triads) to reap the benefits for coaching practice of engaging in mindful dialogue.

This Certificate is aimed at coaches, coaching supervisors, coaching psychologists, coaching academics, leaders, trainers and other helping professionals.

Meet Our Facilitators:

Dr Emma Donaldson-Feilder  is a Relational Mindfulness (RM) and Insight Dialogue teacher, chartered coaching psychologist, coaching supervisor and chartered occupational psychologist, who aims to support the development of kinder, wiser workplaces. In 2019 she completed a Professional Doctorate, in which she conducted research exploring the use of mindfulness and RM in leadership development. Building on this work, she developed a range of RM programmes to support leadership development and coach development. Emma trained as a mindfulness teacher through Bangor University’s Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice (UK) and as an ID teacher and Interpersonal Mindfulness Programme teacher through the Insight Dialogue Community (USA). She is co-author with Liz Hall of Relational Mindfulness for coaches: Enhancing presence, awareness, wisdom, compassion and courageous collaboration (Routledge, 2025).

For many years, Emma’s work incorporated both research and practice in occupational psychology, particularly around the role of leadership and management in employee wellbeing. Her writing includes co-authorship of an award-winning book, Preventing stress in organizations: How to develop positive managers (Wiley, 2011). Her series on RM for Coaching at Work saw her receive a further writing award.

Emma divides her time between London (UK) and Shoreham-by-Sea on the South Coast of the UK, where she has discovered a deep love of the ocean to add to her pre-existing love of being in natural environments such as forests, grasslands and rolling hills. She finds walking and immersing herself in any of these worlds deeply healing and uplifting.

Liz Hall is a leadership/ executive coach, trained mindfulness teacher, award-winning journalist and the editor of Coaching at Work since 2005. She’s the author of publications including the pioneering Mindful Coaching (Kogan Page), and Coach your team (Penguin Business), author/editor of Coaching in times of crisis and transformation (Kogan Page), and co-author with Dr Emma Donaldson-Feilder of Relational Mindfulness for coaches: Enhancing presence, awareness, wisdom, compassion and courageous collaboration (Routledge). She’s a contributor to Ecological and Climate Conscious Coaching (Routledge).

Liz trained as a mindfulness teacher through Bangor University’s Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice (UK) and SolTerreno (Spain) and is currently training as an Interpersonal Mindfulness Programme teacher through the Insight Dialogue Community (US).

Liz launched the annual Climate Coaching Action Day through Coaching at Work in March 2020, celebrating and promoting climate coaching. She’s a member of the Climate Coaching Alliance (CCA), a co-facilitator of the CCA’s Compassion Community of Practice, and a coach with Social Movement Coaching, delivering CPD and coaching to climate & social justice leaders and teams. Other coaching clients include the NHS and Yeo Valley. Liz’s coaching is informed by mindfulness, compassion, somatics, attachment theory, Theory U, psychological safety, systems thinking/feeling and adult vertical development, amongst others. She loves walking by the seaside or in the mountains in southern Spain where she lives.
