Margaret Barr

Profile

I work in partnership with clients towards their professional growth. My clients are usually leaders seeking support and challenge to gain clarity, seize opportunities and make decisions. My career in education included teaching business education and economics, leading and managing a large department, and then being head teacher of a city secondary school. I believe that the development of people is crucial in any organisation, and ‘coaching not fixing’ is the key to growth. My qualifications include MSc Coaching Psychology (Distinction), Scottish Qualification for Headship, and Diploma in Management in Education. I want to make the benefits of coaching more widely accessible by supporting leaders to develop a coaching culture in their organisations.

Coaching approach

My coaching approach is non-directive and strengths-based, influenced by Positive Psychology, Appreciative Inquiry and the Thinking Environment. People come up with their own wonderful solutions when asked the right questions and given time to think. They also learn how to coach themselves. One client described the impact of coaching as ‘subtle yet profound’. I offer a range of assessment instruments including 360 tools and MTQ48 (Mental Toughness). We also evaluate my approach, and the progress being made. I work mostly face to face, but occasionally by phone or Skype. As well as coaching work with individuals, I hold workshops and development courses. All coaching programmes, workshops and development courses finish with regular follow-up email support.
