CONFERENCE ROUNDUP: EUROPEAN MENTORING & COACHING COUNCIL (EMCC) ANNUAL CONFERENCE, PARIS, 17-19 NOVEMBER

By Liz Hall

The time has come to consider the benefits and challenges of merging professional coaching bodies, Lise Lewis, the new president of the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC), has suggested.

Lewis, who stepped into her new role at the EMCC annual conference in Paris on 17-19 November, is suggesting that “leaders in the
coaching and mentoring world propose a strategy for considering the benefits and challenges of merger opportunities between professional and associated bodies.”

Behind the scenes, others, including coaching buyers, have also suggested that it’s time to at least consider the possibility of merging at some point, even if it is then ruled out.

Over her three year tenure, Lewis has pledged to engage with leaders of other professional bodies to “encourage a unifying approach to benefit the profile of coaching and mentoring through identifying areas of mutual interest,” including core competencies, ethics, supervision standards, reciprocal recognition on elements of accreditation and resourcing.

The bodies have already been collaborating in some areas through the Coaching Bodies Roundtable, including in supervision, shared values and accreditation and in sharing details of accreditation schemes to allow an initial comparison to be made. www.coaching-at-work.com/category/accreditation-hub/

Further work is planned on a more in-depth comparison, while Coaching at Work plans to host a round table between coaching sponsors and professional bodies to discuss accreditation.
