Usefulness 3.5/5
My first impression of this book was that it was a clear, succinct and accessible guide to anyone considering starting out as a coach. The author seeks to help the reader with areas such as identifying their own personal niche and appropriate marketing techniques, anticipating clients’ needs, setting rates and writing publicity material. To this end, I was steered by a set of pointed questions through some focused thinking before setting off on any course of action. The author obviously knows her onions and offered tips that kept the process light, without losing functionality. The layout was well signposted.

On balance, this is a useful tool for anyone embarking on a coaching career, or considering a relaunch. The book is written in plain English and the exercises are clear and practical. For those of us already immersed in our coaching, it offered some good directive reminders for rolling business plans. But I found myself asking whether I would ever carry out all the research necessary to recreate my niche without a dedicated marketing month, colleague or department.

What stayed me with me was that by writing this book the author has created her own niche market as a coach to complement the book
content. This is a really clever example of the concept at work. So my lasting impression was one I often have of marketing activity – it takes a lot of commitment and time.
