“The temptation”, writes Aryanne Oade, “to have a beer in the garden on a sunny day or watch a lunchtime news bulletin can result in guilt, lost time and recrimination.”I wouldn’t mind betting that many a newly independent coach has been in that garden at least once. However, this isn’t one of those guiltinducing books that shout instructions at you. Rather, the author takes a pleasingly measured, carefully crafted approach to get you thinking about the most important aspects of starting up as a coach. She includes a series of questions with space to jot down thoughts along the way. The book is a developing, personal resource.
There’s also a lot of wisdom (and experience) here too. Oade likes to present various scenarios to enable the reader to compare and contrast a range of approaches one could take, and this works very well. The sections on describing your coaching services and selling to a particular client’s style were especially useful reminders that one size definitely does not fit all. Very little of this, I suspect, will come as a surprise to established coaches, but with valuable chapters on supervision, ethics and managing your finances, this should be a useful resource for any coach starting out on his or her exciting journey. |
