South Africa: training omits Afrocentric values
A South African black woman was traumatised by being propelled into coaching an older white male in front of other coach trainees, a request that stirred up ghosts of Apartheid and became confused with traditional cultural hierarchies.
The incident is offered as a example of how executive coaching and coach training in South Africa is failing to reflect Afrocentric cultural values, in a study by two researchers from the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Development, University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
