Usefulness 4.5
This is a rare breed of book that does justice to the complexity of executive coaching. It draws on theory, research and practice and is grounded in substantial business experience. Dr Chapman’s Integrated Experiential Coaching model incorporates Wilber’s integral psychology and Kolb’s experiential learning model and then builds on them.
This book will appeal to Wilber’s fans and to those who see coaching as a ‘learning conversation’. Despite a heavy emphasis on multiple theories, the reader is left with an understanding of their relevance to human and leadership development.
Chapman’s thoughtful analysis gives insights into concepts such as the ‘counter-intuitive’ nature of reflective practices to the goals and action-orientation of business. He shares useful insights into team coaching as a way to overcome cost objections to one-to-one coaching.
Researchers/practitioners who wish to build their own practice, grounded in sound methodology, philosophy and theories of human development should read this book. Those coaching among cross-functional, cross-cultural organisational change should also take note.
A fairly complex read, but one that leaves you feeling confident in its due diligence.
